Maple crunchies

You’ll be thrilled to learn that there are actually two versions of this recipe. The first has bacon in it, while the second requires you to add fleur de sel to the recipe. I recommend that you make both of them on your first try, so you see which one you and your family prefer. I have to admit, the second version has a soft spot in my heart because the fleur de sel’s saltiness mixes so well with the syrup’s sweetness.

This sweet treat can be broken into small chunks or tiny pieces, depending on how you want to use it. The smallest fragments can be sprinkled on top of your favorite dessert or breakfast, while the bigger ones can be enjoyed as is. They are great as a snack during a picnic and can give you a small energy boost on a hiking trail, for instance. No matter their size, those maple crunchies are quite practical, as they can last for a while. That is especially true for the fleur de sel version, as it can be eaten over time to satisfy any of your sugar craves – big or small.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup half-salted butter
  • 1/4 cup maple liqueur
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

For the bacon version:

  • 6 slices of precooked bacon

For the fleur de sel version :

  • 1 tsp fleur de sel

Instructions

1. Place the bacon slices in a plate. Brush with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and cook in the microwave for 1 minute. Cut the bacon slices in small pieces.

2. Line a baking sheet with cooking paper.

3. In a saucepan, mix the remaining maple syrup with the butter and maple liqueur. Bring to a boil over medium heat, and simmer for about 10 minutes, until the mixture reaches a temperature of 295 °F (146 °C) on a candy thermometer.

4. Remove from the stovetop, add the baking soda and mix. Immediately spread the mixture on the baking sheet, and even out the surface using a spatula.

5. Evenly sprinkle the fleur de sel over half of the crunchy. Repeat with bacon on the second half.

6. Cut or break into pieces and enjoy!
